Very cool.

Fact that it’s starting in Switzerland brings Norway’s situation to mind. A big oil producer, but the global leader in EV adoption.

( Norwegians drive ~8000 miles per year on average, half what US drivers do.)

If you’re interested, check out the Orkney Islands Pilot Program— hydrogen is a key component. I figure, if they can make it work at those latitudes? It can work anywhere in the lower 49 in the USA.

I thought the IIHS “average” US annual US mileage was 13 ,500 miles? has that been adjusted upward?

Yeah, you’re right - I had it in my head it was closer to 15k.

Very cool on the Orkney Islands project.

I think for males it is.

Elderly females don’t drive much.  Who knew?

In an interesting sidenote on the Norway thing (my wife is Norwegian, so we traditionally spent a lot of time in Oslo) is that the other “highly hydro powered” economy is actually Paraguay. It’s the other place BEVs make a lot of sense.

I still think “storage and weight ” is what trips up the model here. We will continue to build excess solar capacity— so that might as well go into a “store-able” form and hydrogen or ammonia (NH4) are naturals.

Oddly, the “ammonia as a carrier” thing seems to have eluded Musk, but for those of us from farm country?  Anhydrous Ammonia is easily stored, transported and used.  It’s an everyday sight across the midwest.  Elon needs to get out of LA more.

Interesting. Washington state makes 27% of their energy from hydro.

As long as it’s stored properly, of course ...

I think you may have transposed digits for WA percentage of electrical generation by hydro. It’s a lot closer to 72% than 27.

Oh, wow! I just found it on another website, so they must’ve had it wrong.

Oregon’s similarly high.

Yup. Snowpack in the mountains is a really important factor for maintaining generating capacity here. It makes climate change and shrinking glaciers that much more important.
